Coachella 2010! April 16-18

20 Jan

looks like fun

If somebody asked me to list the greatest (current) music festivals in the United States, I’d probably give them the following five in no particular order: Virgin Festival, SXSW, Lollapalooza, Sasquatch! Music Festival, and Coachella. Given that I will not be attending 4/5 of these events, pardon me while I gush about the one I will.

Welcome to Coachella 2010. A three day music fest located in sunny Indio California. From April 16-18, for the price of $269, you can rock your socks off, shake your groove thing, dance like a maniac, or sway awkwardly from side to side. The choice is yours! Currently in its 11th year, the show is bringing a solid mix of rock/indie/electronic/classic/contemporary/mellow/upbeat moods to the sunny April weekend. But what’s so special?

“Jay-Z, eat your heart out.” – Stephen Colbert.

Alicia Keys – “Empire State of Mind”

So basically Alicia Keys went on Stephen Colbert  to do a version of  “Empire State of Mind” (part two??). This video won’t be up for long but anyway..

Yuppie style. Lyrics follow from what I could make out.

I love New York king of all the cities, lived up by the Guggenheim ’til I got some kiddies..

Moved to Connecticut by George Potaki, (?) to the dry cleaners pickin up my khakis

Shopping mall is close, my community is gated…My shorties are all private school educated

Home theater system, 60 inch plasma…clean suburban air much better for my asthma

Still hit the city, Times square keep it real…Hard Rock cafe for the appetizer deal

M&M store, Disney Store, I’m in heaven…I own this town from 41st to 47th

Take me to the Lion King, that show is fantastic…Leave half an hour so I can beat the traffic

I can get home really fast, drive (?) and EZ pass…Land of cheaper gas and the upper middle class…

Oh Stephen. You rock.

This is another guest post from my friend JO$H. He loves Michael Buble, dont you?

michael_buble_01

heaven is Michael Buble

Dear Michael Buble,

Let me just throw this out there, I think you are a great singer. Along with Josh Groban, you have one of the best vocal ranges and you’re a pure talent in the industry. You sir, could be the new Sinatra that Jay Z claims to be. But, with that said, I just have to say one thing… please shut up. Just stop it, right now.  Lay down the microphone and step away.

Why? Oh, I’ll tell you why.

The 11 Days of Jay-Z: Day 6, There is no doubt

just so cool

just so cool

When Blueprint 3 releases on September 11, it will be the eleventh studio release from Jay-Z in just over thirteen years. We decided now would be a perfect time to look back on the career of one Mr. Shawn Carter. One new day, one new album; a walk down memory lane with the music of one of the greatest rappers alive.

The Blueprint, 2001

The Blueprint came in like a juggernaut of an album and set the tone for the rap game over the next decade. Firmly establishing Jay-Z’s place at the top of the rap game, the world finally took notice to a small voice from Cha-town that would later own the second half of the decade, Mr. Kanye West,

Vol. 3..The life and times of S. Carter

Maintaining his yearly position on the charts and silencing many of the critics from Hard Knock Life, Jay-Z solidified his place as a rap juggernaut when he released “Vol. 3..The Life and Times of S. Carter” in the winter of ’99. He’s takin’ over.

Notable Producers: Swizz Beatz, Timbaland, Rockwilder

No fluke, no kidding

In My Lifetime, Vol. 1: 1997

Jay-Z’s highly anticipated follow-up to Reasonable Doubt was released in the fall of 1997. In My Lifetime, Vol. 1 split critic’s opinions but was well received by the fans (apparent in its Gold, and finally Platinum status). But the album always seemed a little confused, as if it didnt understand where it should be. The lyrical content was consistent with the first album, but the hooks and sound of the tracks varied greatly. Jay-Z himself has publicly expressed his unhappiness with how the album turned out.

“What I did with ‘[In My Lifetime] Volume One’ was I tried to make records. I had just made ‘Reasonable Doubt’ … it wasn’t successful in music industry terms. It was a cult classic on the streets, but it wasn’t successful in the music business and I tried to blend the two. If you look back on ‘In My Lifetime,’ there were songs on there that were brilliant. I don’t listen to that album because I think I messed it up.”

The sign of a meticulous artist. On the one that got away.

“You got ‘Where I’m From,’ ‘Streets Is Watching,’ ‘You Must Love Me,’ and ‘Lucky Me.’ It’s so many incredible records on there that I think I missed having two classics in a row [by] trying to get on the radio. It really hurt me because that album was so good; I can’t listen to it. When that record comes on it just irks me. I don’t have any regrets but musically, the album [is] the one that got away.”

It’s still a great rap album. Definitely not the best of 1997, but still a very solid showing.

The 11 Days of Jay-Z: Countdown to The Blueprint 3

Reasonable Doubt: 1996

We’ll never forget it. Reasonable Doubt. Mafioso rap in the mainstream and arguably the Greatest Jay-Z album ever. One of the most highly lauded rap albums of the 90s, it was critically praised and commercially successful (#23 on Billboard 200). The songs hold up even today.

The Blueprint 3’s Tracklist released

20 Aug

The new Jay Z album is ready to drop so earlier this week he gave us a little taste with the track list:

1. “What We Talkin’ About” (feat. Luke Steele of Empire of the Sun)
2. “Thank You”
3. “D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)”
4. “Run This Town” (feat. Rihanna and Kanye West)
5. “Empire State of Mind” (feat. Alicia Keys)
6. “As It Gets” (feat. Young Jeezy)
7. “One” (feat. Swizz Beatz)
8. “Off That” (feat. Drake)
9. “A Star Is Born” (feat. J. Cole)
10. “Venus vs. Mars”
11. “Already Home” (feat. Kid Cudi)
12. “Hate” (feat. Kanye West)
13. “Reminder”
14. “So Ambitious” (feat. Pharrell)
15. “Young Forever” (feat. Mr. Hudson)

Definitely a lot more guests than a typical Jay-Z album but never the less a solid group.

The other element is production.

There is quite the mix with Kanye, Timbaland, Pharrell, Swizz Beatz producing. The one that stands out, MGMT producing Venus vs. Mars? That decision raises a lot of eyebrows. At least my eyebrows. This is the man who declared, “Can’t wear skinny jeans cause my nahhts don’t fit.” Whats wrong Jay-Z? Don’t tell me you’ve gone hipster on us. Then again its probably just a phase, like a yuppie that buys Wayfarer prescription eyeglasses or really trendy shoes and gets shamed in conformity by his friends so he doesn’t make the same mistake.

Another thing, Jay-Z probably shouldn’t trust Kanye. You know that man is hoarding all of his best songs to himself. Also Kanye is bat-shit-crazy. He probably is trying to make Jay-Z look bad so he can declare himself “best rapper alive”. Just read some of Kanye’s own quotes if you don’t believe this theory, the man thinks he should be in the Bible.

Album drops September 11 2009.  Be There.

Music That Makes You Look Awesome Walking in Slow Motion To: Simian Mobile Disco

13 Aug

Since all the celebrity’s and glamorous people left me for the South of France this August I am putting myself in the music video for this song and setting it in Cannes or St. Tropez.

It opens on my yacht. It is the biggest yacht you have ever seen. It is pulling into port at Cannes or St. Tropez as the sun is setting. I step off the boat in slow motion as the camera pans around me. The average camera shot is about 2 seconds constantly shifting from profiles to me walking straight towards the camera to helicopter shots to me walking away from the camera. Why? Because it looks bad ass in a music video.

I am wearing white tie and smoking a cigar.

I get in my Bentley convertible that is waiting for me and get whisked off to an open air night club on the beach. At my table are Jamie Foxx, Sascha Baron Cohen, Jay-Z, some famous socialite heir that people would know, Ashton Kutcher,  and Vin Diesel. We sit there drinking Dom Perignon. There is a crazy party going on but it is important that we sit and look cool not interacting with each other besides the ocassional lean in comment. Then we all get up and roll to my yacht in a fleet of Bentleys.  As the yacht sails out of the harbor with a big party going the sun starts to rise.

In this entire video I only move in slow motion.
