Malcom McLaren – “Double Dutch” and “Buffalo Gals”

Malcom McLaren is probably best known as the Sex Pistol’s manager, but he was associated with several other notable acts as well (New York Dolls, Adam & the Ants, Bow Wow Wow). I can’t honestly say I knew much about the man until an NPR piece came out after his death yesterday. I was surprised to hear how far his influence stretched.

Not only did he manage several bands, but he also put out a few classics of his own like Duck Rock (1983). The album was notable for several reasons: 1)introduced hip hop to a wider audience in the U.K., 2)early collaboration from the Art of Noise 3)Earliest recordings from members of the Nation of Gods and Earths (influencing people like Rakim and Big Daddy Kane) 4)the music is still influential today (Eminem’s homage about two trailer park girls on “Without Me” as a direct reference to “Buffalo Gals”).
