Matt Berninger

A few days ago, Pitchfork had the luxury of sitting down with Matt Berninger, the lead singer of The National. The interview is pretty simple and focuses almost exclusively on the upcoming album, but also touches upon touring, and the National’s growing appeal to marketing agencies. I found the most interesting bit to be his insight on group dynamics when fine tuning a song.

That’s where the fighting happens between us. There’s the one camp that’s always like, “This song’s better simple,” and then there’s another camp that’s like, “It’s boring simple.” That switches around from song to song, and it gets heated, but it’s how it’s always been. Since our second record, we started to know this is the phase we always go through, and we usually will come out the other side still friends, and with a pretty good record.

I’ve included the Google ad featuring The National as well as a clip of a new song (that might or might not be on the album…they’re still figuring that out).

Grammy Awards

I’m sure that many of you out there will be on the edge of your seats tonight, glued to the tube and wondering who will take home the coveted album of the year. I can’t watch it, given that i’m 6 hours ahead in snowy France, but I’m going to throw out a few thoughts on the candidates and who SHOULD take home an award tonight.

Record of the year:

Now you're a man.

We’ve got 5 artists up for the record of the year. Four are obvious inclusions and only one is a wild card. Taylor Swift, as cute as her pixie image is, has no shot in hell at this award, unfortunately. She’s a very talented young pop star and she’ll no doubt be back several times, but this is just not her year. Me, i’m rooting for the Kings of Leon and one of the few representations of rock in popular music these days.

Unfortunately for this tight knit group from Tennessee, this is a three dog race: Beyonce, B.E.P., and Lady Gaga with no obvious lead among the three. Clearly “Poker Face” took the world by storm and made Lady Gaga a household name almost overnight. “Halo” was another epic Beyonce song cementing her status as a juggernaut in pop music. But, lest we forget Will.I.Am and the Black Eyed Peas with their infectious club banger “I gotta feeling.” Hell, we all have had that song stuck in our head for at least the first few days of the work week. Damn, this one will be close.

I’m going for the long shot with Kings of Leon and “Use Somebody.” It’ll probably be “I gotta feeling,” but c’mon Will, let somebody else win one! Hell, they made a rock song a club hit. Either way, 5/5, go America.

Album of the year

Okay so i’m really of the opinion that most of these award shows have a balancing tendency in selecting winners (especially in a year like this one). It’s clear that not a single one of the 5 (well 4, I dont know why the Dave Matthews band is there…) albums is head and shoulders above the rest; they’re all fantastic in a subjective sense. Yet, I think this race is really just between two divas, Beyonce and Gaga. So who’s going to win. Shit, I dont know. Gaga by half a hair. BUT, that means song of the year goes to Beyonce for “Single Ladies (put a ring on it)”.

Last but not least. While I want the Silversun Pickups for best new artist (awesome that they were even nominated), I think that MGMT or the Ting Tings have the best chance of winning. Go MGMT!

Michael Jackson Tribute at the Grammy Awards

A 3D representation of Michael Jackson’s “Earth Song” will be held in tribute to the late pop star at the Grammy Awards this year. Apparently this song was never released in the United States even though it was a worldwide megahit, reaching number one in several countries back in the dark ages (1995). I was kind of young and listening to Blind Melon so I’ve got no idea why the hell it wasn’t released stateside. Ah well. Enjoy the song regardless.

I like those bags

Kanye

I love Kanye. I’d give him a big hug if I saw him. The man knows music, the man knows fashion, the man knows popular culture. Sure he goes a little diva nutso every once in a while, but that’s because the man is an entertainer from his cardigan to his soul. So, I guess it’s no surprise Kanye is back blogging and dropped some awesome rant for us all to enjoy. We get some musings on life, fashion, the struggle, being a rock star…etc

Check it out. I bolded/underlined the most awesome shit.

“WHEN IT’S ALL SAID AND DONE, REMEMBER THE FEARLESS, REMEMBER THE DREAMERS, REMEMBER THOSE WHO REPRESENT THE GHETTO…THE FAIRY TALE OF NOTHING TO SOMETHING. I’M BRIEFLY SADDENED BY NEGATIVE COMMENTS, BUT I HAVE TO REMEMBER THOSE PEOPLE ARE SCARED, INCAPABLE OR JUST PLAIN IDIOTS. WE ARE THE FUCKING ROCK STARS BABY. NO COCAINE, JUST LIFE MY NIGGAS!! NO COCAINE, JUST LIFE! IT’S FUNNY TO ME WHEN FASHION BLOGGERS DOWN OUR OUFITS AND THEN SUPER JOCK OUTLANDISH SHIT ON THE RUNWAY BUT THEN THEY DRESS MAD PRUDE AND DON’T LIVE FASHION. WE LIVE IT MAN. FUCK THAT, WE LIVE IT!!! WE LIVE IT SO HARD PEOPLE LIVE THROUGH US! WE REPRESENT YOUR INNER SPIRIT!! THE CHILD IN US ALL, THE BRUTAL HONESTY, THE NAIVETY, THE BRAVE WARRIOR, THE ADRENALINE THAT ALLOWS A MOTHER TO LIFT A CAR IF HER CHILD WAS TRAPPED UNDER IT! REMEMBER, THERE WAS A TIME WHEN EVERYBODY DISSED MICHAEL JACKSON EVERY CHANCE THEY COULD. IMAGINE THE PRESSURE OF BEING A TRUE ICON. VERY FEW HUMAN BEINGS ARE STRONG ENOUGH TO TAKE CONSTANT HATE!!! IF WE DON’T DO WHAT YOU FEEL IS THE SHIT, YOU BEAT US UP VERBALLY AND MENTALLY, LIKE A CATHOLIC SCHOOL TEACHER BEATING A CREATIVE STUDENT INTO SUBMISSION. I CAN HEAR YOU SCREAMING ‘COLOR INSIDE THE LINES!!!’ WELL FUCK YOUR COLORING BOOK, COLOR BY NUMBERS APPROACH TO LIFE. AT THE END OF THE DAY WHO ARE WE HURTING??? OH “THE NEW BLACK???” SINCE BARACK IS PRESIDENT BLACKS DON’T LIKE FUR COATS, RED LEATHER, AND FRIED CHICKEN ANY MORE?! WHEN YOU TRULY UNDERSTAND CULTURAL SETTINGS, BOUNDARIES, AND OUR MODERN DAY CASTE SYSTEMS, THEN YOU CAN FEEL THE GLORY AND PAIN FROM THE DAYS OF KINGS IN AFRICA TO THE NEW KINGS OF THE MEDIA. LET THE BALL PLAYERS DANCE AFTER THEY SCORE! IT’S LIFE MY NIGGAS, IT’S LIFE! REMEMBER CLOTHING IS A CHOICE. WE WERE BORN NAKED!!! FRESH IS AN OPINION, LOVE IS OBJECTIVE, TASTE IS SELECTIVE, AND EXPRESSION IS MY FAVORITE ELECTIVE. NO MORE POLITICS OR APOLOGIES!!!”

Man, I  am down like Charlie Brown on what Kanye is saying. Calls to “color in the lines” when you’re trying to be creative must feel crippling. Hatred that people (bloggers like myself to people on the street and paid critics) spit towards those in the light could feel crippling to a lesser spirit. I don’t envy his life, but I respect his talent. But I have to laugh a little, the funny part of it all (to me at least) is that it seemed as though this rant was sparked by PETA dissing his wardrobe Really? Hell Kanye, I thought you stopped caring about that years ago, especially PETA. I mean, I want to dress like Kanye West.

Anyway, thats all i’ve got for this week. Tune in next week for the buzz around the web.
